The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) requires that students receive Comprehensive Health Education.

The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) requires that students receive Comprehensive Health Education. In grades 6 through 12, this includes only one unit of study on Reproductive Health and Disease Education; middle and high school students are to be made aware of the benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy.  In addition, FLDOE requires that students in grades 6 through 12 learn about reproductive health and any disease, including HIV/AIDS, its symptoms, development, and treatment.   For students in grades 7 through 12, the topic of teen dating violence and abuse is also taught.

Our middle school students will receive this instruction in their science class during the month of May for approximately three weeks.  High school students will receive this short unit of study through their Personal Fitness course, a class that is taken only one time while in high school.   The Reproductive Health and Disease Education lessons will include factual information and will be delivered in a manner that is age and developmentally appropriate for the grade level of the student.  As a parent, you will have the opportunity to preview these lessons before the unit is taught.

It is important to know that, as a parent, you have the right to decide if you would like your child not to participate in this unit of study.  You will receive additional information from your child’s school and the District on how to access the opt-out letter.
