Welcome to the Visual Arts Program at MAST Academy
“The true purpose of the arts education is not necessarily to create more professional artists. It is to create more complete human beings who are critical thinkers, who have curious minds, who can lead productive lives” The Visual Arts program at MAST Academy supports students learning aesthetic and critical inquiry, cultural and historical context, and studio skills. Comprehensive and sequential learning experiences provide students with basic skills, understanding, and confidence to participate fully in the arts not only at school but throughout their lives. The art program embraces every learning style and can serve as the opportunity to greater success in academic subjects as students learn to develop ideas by drawing upon experience, exploring feelings, observing, and researching famous works of art. The art program teaches teamwork, collaboration, cooperation all which are assets in any work setting. It also teaches students that creating a quality product requires sustained effort, discipline, and study. Students learn that hard work and creativity are essential for successful careers as they carry this important ethic into the workplace. In the Visual Arts program student will: -Learn about the formal elements of art such as color, line, value, light, perspective, and proportion. -Examine a variety of basic painting techniques. -Recognize significant artists and their cultures. -Demonstrate appreciation of the arts as visual representations of specific historical periods. -Express concepts and emotions in work of art. -Explore new techniques and procedures. -Demonstrate good craftsmanship. -Write, draw, and collect information in a sketchbook/journal. -Develop their intellectual, imaginative, and expressive potential. -Develop skills, techniques, and a knowledge of processes as a basis for personal expression. -Create, perform, and present arts works. -Develop critical skills and an understanding of aesthetics. -Enjoy participating in the processes of creating. -Presenting and responding to the arts. The arts are valued in our society as important outlets for the communication of ideas, feelings, and beliefs.
